I recently learned about a couple who adopted a little boy with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. FASD has profound effects on the nervous system, sensory system and cognitive development. At a party, the little boy felt overwhelmed and had a “meltdown”. The family had to leave early. Mom lost her best friend that day because her child’s needs were too much for her friend to deal with.
Another family began fostering 3 children. Now a family of 7, they were no longer invited by their friends to social occasions.
I wish these stories were unique, but sadly they are common.
